SPRING 2017 LECTURE

Is miscarriage a disability?

A discussion with Aleksandra Stefanovic-Chafe

NLCAHR BOARDROOM

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2017  12:30PM-2:00PM

Available by webinar—see details below

The Talk:  In March 2014 Wenying Mou brought a complaint to the Ontario Human Rights Commission claiming that her former employer discriminated against her in firing her. The claim of discrimination was put forward on the basis that several health issues, including her having a miscarriage during her employment, constituted a series of short term disabilities. In an interim ruling, the Commission found that the applicant's miscarriage is a disability. The case is unique and quite complex, and as such it sparked a vigorous debate.

Aleksandra Stefanovic-Chafe discusses some of the potentially negative perceptions of women's health and pregnancy, as well as the labour market participation of other individuals with disabilities.

Aleksandra Stefanovic-Chafe is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Medicine’s Division of Community Health and Humanities and a student fellow with the Centre for Research on Work Disability Policy (CRWDP). The aim of her proposed research is to examine employment support programs and policies for individuals with mental health disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Newfoundland and Labrador. Her primary goal is to define pathways and increase opportunities for individuals with mental health issues and ASD to successfully integrate into their local labour market, improve their health outcomes, and live more fulfilling lives.
