This webinar will be presented by Zhanna Lyubykh (Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary). Zhanna’s presentation is entitled Implicit Bias in Disability Disclosure.

Presentation Description: Persons with disabilities face potential discrimination at all stages of an employment cycle, ranging from hiring to performance evaluations. This is because persons with disabilities often face implicit bias—unconscious stereotypes that people hold about persons with disabilities. In the first part of this presentation, I present research findings on managers’ evaluations of employees with disabilities in the return-to-work context. More specifically, I will discuss how different types of disability labels may have implications for managers’ differential evaluations, and how a “pending diagnosis” may protect persons with disabilities from unfair managerial evaluations. Next, I will discuss how a swift shift to work from home arrangements caused by the pandemic may benefit persons with disabilities. Moreover, I will consider potential downsides of working from home and highlight recommendations aimed at mitigating those potential downsides.
